Carpet Calculator: Roll Width Changes the Quantity
Use rectangular cuts and an explicit roll direction to plan linear carpet purchases.
A carpet calculator must consider roll width and cut direction as well as floor area. Count the rectangular runs needed across the room, multiply by the selected run length, apply your chosen additional allowance and round to the supplier's sale-length increment. This is a purchase estimate, not a seam or pattern-layout design.
The carpet roll planner supports rectangular, unpatterned run calculations. Patterned carpet, stairs and complex shapes need a supplier cutting schedule.
Why equal areas can require different roll lengths
A roll has a fixed width. A room wider than that width may require more than one run of material, even when its total area seems small enough to fit within the same nominal roll area.
For example, a hypothetical 5-by-4-metre room has 20 square metres of floor area. With a 3-metre-wide roll and runs following the 5-metre dimension, two runs are needed across the 4-metre width. The raw purchased roll length is therefore 10 metres, representing 30 square metres of material.
The extra nominal area comes from rectangular cut geometry. It is different from an additional percentage allowance. An area-only calculator can hide that difference.
Measure a rectangle and choose direction
Enter the room's measured length and width. The direction control asks whether runs follow the room length or width. You make that choice; the carpet calculator does not optimize seams or decide the appropriate appearance.
If you reverse direction in the hypothetical room, runs follow 4 metres and span the 5-metre dimension. Two 3-metre-wide runs are still needed, giving 8 linear metres instead of 10. That arithmetic difference is not a recommendation to use the shorter option.
Your selected layout, product instructions and supplier cutting plan may constrain direction. The carpet calculator shows the quantity consequences of the direction you explicitly choose.

Read the actual roll width
Use the physical width of the selected product. Do not infer a standard width from the word carpet or from a similar product. Region selection is not a substitute for reading the supplier's current format.
Keep all linear values in the selected measurement unit. If the room is entered in metres, roll width and sale increment must also be metres. The carpet calculator converts existing dimensions when you change feet and metres.
The package identifier should include the product and any distinctions needed for your purchase. A vague name can cause confusion when reviewing several rooms or suppliers.
Count complete runs
The number of runs equals the cross-roll room dimension divided by roll width, rounded upward. The final partial width still consumes a run. Raw roll length is the number of runs multiplied by the along-roll room dimension.

The model does not subtract doors or small excluded floor areas as if they always shorten a full run. It also does not nest irregular offcuts into other cuts. Those optimizations need a more detailed schedule.
Enter the supplier's sale increment
A supplier may sell length in specified increments. Enter the actual increment for the selected product rather than assuming that any decimal length can be purchased.
For a hypothetical increment of 0.5 metres, the carpet calculator divides the adjusted required length by 0.5 and rounds upward to whole increments. The output count therefore describes increments, with the total linear quantity shown in the calculation.
Do not confuse an increment with a complete roll length. The selected purchase unit must match the supplier's sale arrangement. If the product is available only as a complete roll, use the appropriate whole-roll information in your separate supplier plan.
Work through a complete example
Take the hypothetical 5-by-4-metre room, a 3-metre-wide roll, and runs following the room length. The raw length is 10 metres. If you choose an illustrative 4% additional allowance, the adjusted length becomes 10.4 metres.
At a sale increment of 0.5 metres, the carpet calculator calculates 20.8 increments and rounds upward to 21. The buying length is 10.5 metres. That is 0.1 metre above the adjusted length and 0.5 metre above the raw run length.

The room dimensions, width, increment and allowance are demonstration values. They are not a specification or recommendation for a real product.

Keep cutting loss and extra allowance distinct
The run model already accounts for purchasing full roll width across the room. The additional percentage is a separate user choice applied to raw run length. It should not unknowingly duplicate extra quantity already included in a supplier cutting schedule.
Because the model is linear, its leftover fields describe linear quantity above the calculated runs. They do not describe every width offcut or guarantee that a spare rectangular piece can be used in another room. Read the allowance guide and rounding guide to keep those interpretations separate.
Do not optimize several rooms by total area
The workspace keeps carpet cut records separate. It does not add all floor areas and assume they can be arranged perfectly across a roll. Different run lengths and directions can prevent that arrangement.
A supplier can sometimes develop a more efficient shared cutting schedule. The evidence for that saving is the explicit allocation of cuts, not simply a lower total square-metre figure. Use the project list to preserve each room's input assumptions and compare them with the supplier's schedule before purchase.
Know when this model is not the right one
Pattern matching can require extra lengths or offsets that this simple run calculation does not model. Stairs, curved outlines and seam placement also need more information than a room rectangle.
The carpet calculator states those limits instead of selecting hidden pattern or installation defaults. It does not determine whether a seam arrangement is appropriate or whether a floor construction is safe.
For modular carpet sold by box coverage, use the carpet tile guide instead. The sale and calculation formats are different.
Review before purchase
- Confirm the room is represented by the supported rectangular model.
- Check the current physical roll width.
- Choose direction explicitly.
- Review complete runs and raw linear length.
- Enter the actual supplier sale increment.
- Choose any additional allowance.
- Keep separate room cuts and verify them with the supplier.
- Print the quantity and assumptions together.

Compare directions as explicit scenarios
Changing the roll direction can change raw length, but a smaller arithmetic quantity is not automatically the appropriate selected layout. Keep the direction supplied by your project information or supplier schedule.
For a hypothetical 6-by-4-metre rectangle with a 4-metre-wide roll, runs along the 6-metre dimension need one run and six linear metres. Runs along the 4-metre dimension need two runs across six metres, giving eight linear metres. The floor area is unchanged at 24 square metres.
The example demonstrates geometry, not a seam recommendation. If direction is constrained by the chosen product or pattern, that constraint must remain part of the plan.
Check the increment and total length together
A result of twenty increments is incomplete unless the increment size is known. Twenty half-metre increments represent ten metres; twenty one-metre increments represent twenty metres. The printed list should preserve coverage per increment and total linear quantity.
If the supplier changes the sale increment, update that field rather than changing only the package label. The adjusted run length remains the same, but its upward-rounded purchase may change.
An exact increment boundary needs no extra increment. A genuine fractional remainder rounds upward. Display rounding should not erase that remainder before the whole-unit calculation.
Understand width offcuts separately from linear excess
The run model purchases full roll width even when the cross-room remainder is narrower. That creates a geometric difference between purchased area and room area before the additional allowance is considered.
The displayed linear excess does not sum all width offcuts. A short extra length at full width and a long narrow strip are different shapes, and the carpet calculator does not claim they can substitute for one another.
If you need a complete cutting inventory, use the supplier's explicit schedule. The simple run estimate can help check its overall magnitude but cannot reproduce all nesting decisions.
Keep room cuts traceable on the final list
Save each rectangle with a clear room or section label. If a room requires a more complex plan, do not hide that fact by entering several rectangles and assuming the software optimizes their shared roll.
The separate records preserve the chosen run direction and dimensions. Review them with the supplier before purchase, particularly when a pattern or seam arrangement affects what lengths are required. This makes the planner a useful quantity record while leaving the more detailed cutting decisions visible.

One last planning check
Before accepting a supplier comparison, confirm that both calculations use the same roll width and direction. A difference in either can explain a different linear quantity even when the room dimensions match.
Also compare whether the supplier figure includes additional cutting or pattern allowances. The carpet calculator cannot infer those inclusions from a final length alone. A useful comparison identifies the assumptions first and compares the resulting quantity only after the two records describe the same scenario.
