Paint Calculator: From Wall Measurements to Cans
Separate wall area, coat count, label coverage and can rounding for a clear paint buying estimate.
A paint calculator estimates buying quantity by multiplying net painted area by your specified coat count, dividing by coverage for the selected can size, applying your chosen allowance and rounding to whole cans. Measure the actual painted surfaces. Floor area alone does not describe how much wall surface you intend to paint.
Use the paint purchasing planner with a current product label. The paint calculator deliberately asks you to enter coat count and coverage instead of choosing them from a room name.
Begin with a surface list
Separate walls, ceilings and trim when they use different products, colours, sheens or coat counts. Two surfaces in the same room can belong to different purchases. Conversely, walls in several rooms can share one purchase if the exact paint and can format are interchangeable.
Name each record so you can find it later: “hallway long wall” is more informative than “paint one”. A surface list also makes it easier to see whether a ceiling was included twice or a wall with a large opening was omitted.
For a simple rectangular wall, multiply its measured width by its measured height. Enter that pair in the paint calculator.
You can add each wall separately and preserve its opening subtraction. This avoids relying on a single room-perimeter formula when wall heights differ.

Subtract measured openings
Doors and windows can reduce the area receiving wall paint. Measure each excluded opening, multiply its dimensions, and add the results before entering the excluded area for that wall. Keep frames and reveals separate if they are part of another painted surface.
Consider a hypothetical wall 14 feet wide and 8 feet high. Its gross area is 112 square feet.
If a measured opening occupies 21 square feet, its net wall area is 91 square feet. A second opening would be subtracted only if it belongs to the same surface and was not already included.
Gross wall area = 14 × 8 = 112 ft² Net wall area = 112 − 21 = 91 ft²

Enter the coat count from your project specification
The paint calculator does not infer the number of coats from a colour, substrate or paint marketing description. Enter the whole coat count you have chosen using the current product instructions and project specification. A can described as paint and primer does not make the calculator assume a single application.
Multiplying area by coats creates coat-area: the surface area counted once for each specified application. A 91-square-foot wall with a user-entered count of 2 becomes 182 square feet of coat-area. That does not mean the wall grew; it records two applications over the same surface.
Keep primer and finish paint as separate product entries when both are part of your existing plan. Do not combine their coverage simply because both are measured in square feet. Their identities and stated coverage can differ.
Match coverage to the exact can size
The coverage field asks for the area covered by one selected can for one coat. If a label states coverage per litre and your selected package contains several litres, calculate the stated can coverage before entering it. Record the can size in the product identifier so later entries use the same purchase unit.
For a hypothetical product with a label rate of 10 square metres per litre, a 2.5-litre can corresponds to 25 square metres per coat under the label's stated conditions. Those example values are not a manufacturer specification. Use the numbers on your actual selected product.
Do not mix coverage per US gallon with a package sold in a different gallon definition. The simplest record uses the coverage directly attached to the selected physical can. If conversion is needed, identify the liquid unit precisely rather than writing only “gallon.”

Interpret a coverage range
A manufacturer may publish a range instead of one guaranteed coverage figure. For example, the official BEHR PREMIUM PLUS Interior product page lists 250–400 square feet per gallon, checked on 9 September 2026. This is a product-page fact, not a promise that your surface will achieve a particular endpoint.
The paint calculator does not silently choose the largest number from a range. Enter the lower endpoint in the coverage field and the upper endpoint in the optional range field.
The paint calculator preserves both and uses the lower endpoint for its conservative purchase estimate. A lower assumed coverage requires more paint for the same coat-area.
Do not convert an example into a verified catalog record by copying a brand name. A catalog record must identify its region and selected package. In this version, paint coverage remains user-entered so the assumption stays explicit.
Work through one complete buying example
Suppose your hypothetical group of walls totals 620 square feet after openings. You specify 2 coats, choose a 5% additional allowance, and enter 350 square feet of coverage per selected can. The example is arithmetic only; it does not recommend any of those values.

The rounding excess is 98 square feet of stated coat-coverage above the adjusted plan. Purchased coverage exceeds the raw coat-area by 160 square feet. The larger figure includes the allowance; it is not a measured liquid leftover in the can.
Because paint consumption varies, the displayed excess should be interpreted as coverage-equivalent arithmetic. It does not promise an exact remaining liquid volume or a particular touch-up area.
Combine rooms without mixing paint identities
Save each painted surface using the same identifier only when the product, colour, finish and can coverage are interchangeable. “White paint” is too broad if one record is wall emulsion and another is trim paint. A detailed identifier prevents the shopping list from treating them as one product.
The combined list adds waste-adjusted quantities and rounds the total for matching cans. That can produce fewer cans than rounding every wall separately. It does not remove a user's chosen allowance; it simply avoids treating every small wall as an independent unopened-can purchase.
If surfaces use different coverage assumptions for the same named product, the paint calculator preserves separate groups because the package coverage differs. Review those entries before buying rather than forcing them together with a vague label.

Check what the result does not include
The paint calculator covers the selected coating quantity. It does not choose surface preparation, determine hazardous-material treatment, calculate solvents, or specify protective equipment. Those decisions are outside the quantity model.
It also does not forecast price or stock. A computed can count is not an order and does not confirm that a retailer has the chosen colour or package available. Verify the current product and purchase format directly before you shop.
If you change can size, recalculate coverage per can and the resulting whole-can count. A smaller count after changing to a larger can does not necessarily mean less material was purchased; compare purchased coverage as well as package count.
Before printing your paint list
- Check each record describes a painted wall, ceiling or other intended surface.
- Verify door and window exclusions against the correct wall.
- Confirm the specified coat count.
- Match entered coverage to one selected physical can.
- Record the product, colour, sheen and can size in the identifier.
- Review the chosen allowance separately from rounding.
- Combine only matching purchases and print the final list.

Compare can sizes through total stated coverage
If a selected paint is available in more than one can size, create a consistent coverage value for each candidate format. A larger can can reduce the number of containers while increasing the total coverage purchased. The count alone cannot tell you which format leaves less excess.
For a hypothetical adjusted coat-area of 480 square feet, a 300-square-foot can format requires two cans, while a 150-square-foot format requires four. Both represent 600 square feet of nominal coverage. Their counts differ, but their arithmetic excess is the same.
Those values are illustrative. Actual coverage must come from the selected product and can basis. The paint calculator does not compare prices, account for mixed-size can combinations or assume that all container sizes are available in the chosen colour.

Keep a coating change separate from a measurement change
If you switch paint products, the wall dimensions do not change. Update the product identifier and coverage, then review the resulting can count. If you change the specified coat count, review coat-area separately from net surface area.
This separation is useful when discussing a result: you can say whether the change came from a new surface measurement, an application count or a different coverage assumption. A final integer without those intermediate values cannot explain the difference.
